USA 2 Spain 0 USA Advance to the Confederations Cup Final
USA beat Spain 2-0 in the greatest upset of the Confederations Cup and now advance to the final.
The USA made history by beating European champions Spain 2-0 and now advance to the South Africa 2009 Confederations Cup final where they will meet either South Africa or Brazil.
The United States ended the Spaniards’ record winning streak with their first defeat in 35 internationals, a run stretching back to November 2006. Spain’s defeat also denies them the world record of 15 consecutive wins.
Clint Dempsey set up Jozy Altidore to turn his marker, Joan Capdevila, and then score the first goal from 18 yards after 27 minutes. Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas got his glove in the way but the Real Madrid keeper simply could not deal with the power of Altidore’s strike. The score remained 1-0 until half time.
After 74 minutes Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy) got the ball to Dempsey via a few defensive errors by Pique and Ramos, and the Fulham star hustled the ball over the line to secure a famous victory.
