USA Booted Egypt and Italy to Meet Spain in the Semi Final

The US thumped Egypt 3-0. Now Italy and Egypt are out and the US will face Spain in the semi-finals of the 2009 Confederations Cup.

Tonight the United States had to thump the African Cup of Nations champions, Egypt, by a convincing margin to possibly edge past Egypt and Italy in the final clash of Group B in the 2009 Confederations Cup.

After 22 minutes Jozy Altidore’s cross caused chaos in the box, the Egyptian goalkeeper had a serious collision with one of his own players, before Charlie Davies capitalised and scored to put the USA ahead. The keeper Essam El Hadary required 6 minutes of medical attention and a big white bandage round his head.

41 minutes later captain Landon Donovan crossed one in to Michael Bradley who passed the ball into the net to double the US advantage.

It was fitting that Fulham star and man of the match Clint Dempsey scored with a brilliant header in the 71st minute. His goal edged the USA past their rivals in the Group B league table, Egypt and Italy, based on their total goals scored.

Full time score: USA 3-0 Egypt.

At the same time, Italy suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brazil in Pretoria causing the US to advance into the 2009 Confederations Cup semi-finals based on goal difference.

The other semi-final will see the proud hosts Bafana Bafana meet Brazil, who are currently sitting at number five in the FIFA world rankings.

    Odds on Brazil/Spain meeting in the final 3/13, South Africa/Spain 31/5, Brazil/USA 7.

Could not find odds for SA vs. USA meeting in the final.

That has got to be frustrating. I mean, the defenders kept getting in his way while he was diving for the ball! The lack of coordination cost them dearly, but I can’t say the keeper should be blamed on it.

Then again, I’m a keeper, so I sympathize.

Awesome follow through on the part of the US, though they were lucky to get it in.
