Vampire Hunter Lincoln gets Hollywood Green Light from Tim Burton

Horror history mash-up gets Hollywood green light one day after book release.

No sooner had the ink dried on the first sold copies of Seth Grahame-Smith’s new horror history mash-up Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, than Hollywood’s own dark knight Tim Burton announced he would be involved in the Presidential Vamp movie adaptation.

The director who is currently promoting Alice in Wonderland will team up with Wanted director Timur Bekmambetov to bring Vampire Hunter Abe to the big screen.

Seth Grahame-Smith was catapulted into the literary limelight with his satire of Jane Austen’s romantic snore-fest Pride and Prejudice.

The story was reanimated with the introduction of the undead to the story and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies went on to make both The New York Times Bestseller list and Amazon’s Bestseller list last year, selling over 700,000 copies.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter went on sale worldwide yesterday following a similar theme to Grahame-Smith’s previous work, taking well established characters, and giving them an assortment of katana, throwing knives, axes and ninja skills to battle evil.

Eager to separate himself from the misunderstood, strong-but-silent emo vampires of Twilight, the author revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair:

“I think it’s time in literature to stop kissing vampires and start killing them again. I have plenty of respect for what Stephanie Meyer accomplished, but we’ve gotten to a point where we think vampires should be sexy. And I’m trying to push us back towards thinking vampires as dangerous. They are things that should be feared and beheaded at the earliest possible convenience.”

Excellent stuff, and when vampires need slaying, calling on the skills of all-American hero Abe Lincoln seems like a pretty solid bet. Although no details have been released about the movie yet, a call up for Burton’s versatile wunderkind Johnny Depp could easily be on the cards to play super-slayer Lincoln, we already know he can pull off wearing top hats.

An axe-wielding, vampire-killing Johnny Depp in a surreal macabre reinvention of American history throughout the Civil War – what’s not to like? Post your thoughts on the new book and movie with a comment below.

One Response to Vampire Hunter Lincoln gets Hollywood Green Light from Tim Burton

  1. Jennifer Lynn Weston says:

Johnny Depp is too short and pretty to make a convincing Lincoln.
But that darkly-driven quality he displayed in ‘Sweeney Todd’ would be perfect for the role of Henry Sturges, Abe’s tormented vampire mentor.
