Video Game Streaming OnLive Strike Deal with BT

Cloud gaming service coming to the UK after US June release.

Video game streaming service OnLive has made a partnership deal with British Telecom (BT) to launch its cloud gaming in the UK.

OnLive’s streaming service is set to go live in the US next month on 17 June, but now UK gamers can also expect the service as BT came to an arrangement with the company.

It’s great for our customers and it’s great for BT,” commented BT CEO of Retail Gavin Patterson, “It will enhance our premium broadband position, and we’ll be entering into a market that’s worth more than £2 billion,” reported CNET News.

The idea behind OnLive is that players will be able to play games lag-free over the internet regardless of their machine capabilities. Players won’t have to install of download the games, they’ll simply be streamed straight to their computers as part of the service.

The other main selling point is that gamers will be able to rent games for a limited period, and have a “try before you buy” making gaming much more accessible for gamers without the resources to buy lots of games. OnLive also promises a rich gamer community of users, making competitive and co-operative gaming easier and better.

OnLive has already got games lined up from Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, THQ, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and 2K Games ready to stream to the American market, giving access to games such as Dawn of War 2 and FIFA 2010.

“The UK market is extremely important to OnLive and our video game publishing partners as we expand into Europe,” commented OnLive CEO Scott Perlman.
