The Beatles frontman surprised fans when asked to select his personal favourite songs from 50 years of musical magic.

Sir Paul McCartney has picked out Here, There and Everywhere and Blackbird as surprise favourites from his gargantuan back-catalogue of songs.

With over 500 of his own tunes to choose from, the former Beatle surprised music fans by selecting two little-known tracks. McCartney has crafted 32 US and 24 UK number one hits, but the songs he chose were not even released as singles.

Macca expressed his pride in Here, There and Everywhere, although he will not be playing it on his current  Up and Coming Tour of the UK, Ireland and US.

He told the Daily Mail that Blackbird was something he regularly gets requests for as it is popular among rookie guitar players.

Both the tracks were penned by both McCartney and Lennon. Here, There and Everywhere was featured on the Beatles’ 1966 Revolver album, and was written about McCartney’s time in the press limelight while dating Jane Asher.

Blackbird was written in response to the escalating racial tensions in America during the Spring of 1968. The guitar part for Blackbird was said to be inspired by Bach’s Bourrée in E minor, and the track formed part of the album The Beatles, also known as The White Album.

McCartney continues to pull in huge crowds and build appeal among a new generation of young fans across the world. Barack Obama recently honoured the singer with the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song – a high accolade in the U.S.  After receiving the prize, Sir Paul had the President singing along on stage to Hey Jude in a performance at the White house.
