Winners and Losers in British Blizzards
Wintry weather not over yet for the UK.
One week after the biggest blizzard in two decades gripped the UK, the snow is still clinging to parts of Britain.
Although for most people in the south east, the ice has thawed and things have returned to normal, other parts of the country are still trapped in the wintery chill. The UK Met Office warned that more heavy snow was predicted this week in the midlands near Coventry and Warwickshire.
Of course, while the snow is disruptive and kept about one fifth of the UK workforce at home last Monday, it also gave an exciting opportunity to recapture childhood glory. Snowball fights, sledging and snowman building erupted across the nation on the unofficial winter wonderland holiday.
The snow also prompted us to open a “news through pictures” competition which we called the Big British Freeze Frame. The Gnews community responded to the call for snowy photos with over 100 entries which can be seen here.
The eventual winner of the competition was Cosmo, with his rather cheeky shot of two nubile females enjoying the snow in bikinis. The competition attracted over 20,000 views and 4,500 people voted for the various entries.

When quizzed about his rather unusual photo, Cosmo said he had been walking his two children to school when the two women burst out into the snow with their boyfriends. “Immediately, the chaps started giving them posing instructions and on the spur of the moment I pulled my camera out and took a single shot just as one of the snappers was pressing his own button.”
Cosmo said that the picture “caught the madness of that Monday morning when a few inches of snow brought London to a halt”.
A number of schools are still closed as a result of the bad weather. According to the BBC, the Environmental Agency warned that the melting snow could cause severe flooding in lowland areas.
Two flood warnings have been issued in Leamington Spa and Marton in Warwickshire. The Met Office repeated urgent instructions for drivers to take care on the roads which are still perilous in places.

It’s beautiful photos which show us that without nature we cannot live. We should protect our world.
