Sensational psychological discovery – men judge women on their physical appearance!
In another visionary study of spelling out the abundantly obvious under the guise of “developing psychological theory”, scientists in Edinburgh, Scotland, have come to the astonishing conclusion that given the choice, guys will choose hot women over fugly munters.
This incredible insight into the workings of the human mind came from Dr Alison Lenton, a social psychology lecturer at Edinburgh University, whose research investigates social stereotyping and prejudice.
In collaboration with economist Marco Francesconi from the University of Essex, England, Dr Lenton used a test sample of 3,750 single men and women at speed dating events to determine whether an abundance of choice would skew decisions on judging acceptable future partners.
The shock results showed that presented with multiple options of potential partners, men chose the most attractive females, judging women on their most obvious attributes. Amazingly, women were also blinkered by the physical appearances of men and were unable to divine in the short 3-minute dates whether they had met a soul mate with whom they could relate on a personal level.
According to Dr Lenton, in a speed dating scenario participants are likely to make snap judgements based on, “attributes that could be judged quickly such as their dates’ height, and whether they were underweight, normal weight or overweight,” quoted npr.org.
In another dazzling insight, the study revealed that women were more concerned with height, preferring taller men, whilst men were concerned with weight, preferring thinner women. In a staggering conclusion to the study, Dr Lenton said that at less crowded events, where people actually had the opportunity to talk to one another for more than a superficial 30 seconds, participants were less likely to judge on physical appearance.
So there you have it folks, social psychology has taught us that if you have a chance to talk to someone, you might get to like their personality; but in a contrived social situation, you are more likely to judge a person purely on their good looks – or lack thereof.
Science has truly been furthered with this groundbreaking study.

You’re seriously going make this judgement call on women who have been with Tom Cruise? It’s not that women shouldn’t go out with shorter men, it’s that men shouldn’t go out with you.
So let me get this straight. Cruise and Kidman are divorced, therefore proving that “it never works” and that it’s “a matter of footwear”. We could use more people with your powers of induction.

It is noted that the research of Dr. Lenton investigates social stereotypes and prejudice. Stereotypes are created from popular consciousness. Of course research of a stereotype would examine something that is considered common knowledge (that men like hot women), or it wouldn’t be a stereotype. As for prejudice, conducting a study using speed dating is a perfect situation. If prejudice is superficial beliefs, how better to do it than in an environment that encourages judgments based on superficial traits, like physical features. Furthermore, the study was not about if men liked attractive women. As stated in this article, it was examining whether abundance of choice affected how one judged potential partners. The former is a simple question that a serious social researcher would not waste time researching without developing it further. The latter is a complex social question that asks if one variable has an effect
on another, which is a legitimate scientific question. The objective of social research is to explain a social phenomenon. The author of this article reduces this study to a question of whether or not men like attractive women. Social research is more sophisticated than this. A psychologist would want to explain WHY this phenomenon happens. In order to explain why something happens, data must first be collected. While it may seem obvious that men like attractive women, a professional social scientist would never assume this fact. It makes for poor research when the researcher assumes facts and makes conclusions based on popular opinions. Data collection, no matter how simplistic it may seem, is a necessary step in the scientific method and research process. Furthermore, this data serves as evidence to support whatever conclusion the researcher may reach.
The study does not suggest which weight class men chose more often so you can’t really say “Guys prefer hotties to fatties” with any concrete reason. There are a lot of men out there, and all of those men have very different sexual preferences I’m sure ranging from fairly large women to fairly small women and everything in-between. That said, I think its more accurate to simply say “Men prefer women they find attractive”. Just thought I would correct you there.

I’m only 5’6″ and I have to keep women off of me… obviously a lot of them are taller than myself. My height was never a problem. Maybe people that think a relationship can or can’t work based on a physical attribute are STUPID.
