The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has judged that the company which made popular role-playing video game “Final Fantasy XIII” had deceived gamers by not using pictures from the Xbox 360 but from the Sony PS3.
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has discovered that Square Enix – the developers of popular sci-fi video game Final Fantasy XIII – had misled gamers by not using pictures from the Xbox 360 but from its arch-rival, the Sony PlayStation 3.
All it took was an eagle-eyed gamer who noticed that the advert was using higher resolution images from the PlayStation 3 for the ASA to act. The Advertising Standards Authority tested the game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 using an identical set-up and agreed that the screen quality on the PS3 was ‘sharper’ than images from the Xbox and have banned the ad from being shown again.
In the ASA adjudication, it was stated: “A viewer objected that the ad was misleading because the game footage in the ad was from the PS3 version of the game, which was of better quality to that of the Xbox 360.”
The complaint was upheld after the ASA made the following ruling: “We tested the two games, on screens with an identical set-up, and ran them alongside one another. We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two; the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the Xbox 360.”
In their defence, Square Enix said that “… the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes”. They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation “to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert”.
Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

Was the advert specifically for the 360 version? If it was simply an ad for the game, no particular console in mind, then Squeenix can do whatever the hell it wants. Of course they’ll use the better looking footage, and anybody who owns a 360 knows full well that the PS3 outperforms it. What a load.
This happens all the time in multi-platform games. Whichever version looks better will be used to create promotional screenshots and videos (whenever possible) for all platforms.
A recent example would be all those screenshots of COD Black Ops you see coming from Activision. They’re in 1920×1080 with what looks like 4x anti-aliasing. The console versions of COD4 and MW2 weren’t even near that, and they’re on the same engine. They remove the HUD to make sure that this kind of false marketing tactic will slip by.
For the record, this kind of thing has happened before with Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. Now you have to put a disclaimer on the bottom of any footage for a game about where it comes from in the UK, so it’s only upholding an existing judgement.
It annoys me, not just on a false advertising level, but also on a “I don’t give a crap about your pretty CGI show, me what I’ll actually be playing” level.
I’ve supported PS since the start. Why lie on this one? FF13 was kinda lame. We need FF15 to come out soon, plus who plays the gay Xbox? My trusty PS3 is always waiting there for me. Oh yeah, so is my PS2 and my PS1 in the same system… Xbox, OK redlights.

Well, some graphics are better on one console than the other, like Fallout 3. I tested it and the detail was better on the Xbox, but other games seem better on the PS3. This accusation IMO is stupid, as it’s advertising the game, not the pretty graphics.
Erm, just as a point the Xbox has better graphics CAPABILITIES than the PS3.
It’s up to the developers who gets the better graphics.

Not only are the graphics processors in the 360 weaker but the cooling sucks too, so you can’t even use the shitty GPUs they do have to the full advantage.

For WEEKS! I once investigated AND searched all I could for the truth between the two consoles once and for all! And in the END I found a specific site (don’t remember where or whhat it was named, SORRY…:S) where people and technicians had compared the electronics in the two consoles! The PS3 won with the best “HD-GRAPHICS” as they pronounced it, due to its BLU-RAY!

Final Fantasy is well known for it’s “CGI” scenes, and they’re basically the same quality as each other on both formats.

Ummmm. Who cares? We all know FF looks better on a PS. Most things look better on the PS3, so as long as the game is fun does it matter what system you play it on?
It’s all down to the developer. You can’t base a whole console’s graphics capabilities on one game. You can only compare games that are on both the consoles in a controlled environment, and in at least 95% of cases, the Xbox 360 comes on top. Try and prove me wrong. Saying that “PS3 has better games” won’t help you because the exclusives cannot be compared. Look at Call Of Duty, it’s got better contrast, black levels, is sharper and has better anti-aliasing on the 360. The same applies for Resident Evil 5 which was originally a PlayStation exclusive. All multi-platform games perform better on the 360, and look better on 360 and IMHO the exclusives are better anyway. lol.
Wow, I cannot believe my eyes. I was in search for an Xbox 360 advert banned (apparently by Norwich in 2010) but came across this instead. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with people? They’re using a PS3 because it has sharper images, that’s what I’d do, even though I only play the 360. I think if they wish to use the PS3, they should be allowed, even if the quality is better -.-
Okay, so after that comment, I just started reading some of the comments and were shocked to only find one reasonable comment, the one before mine. I’m pretty sure Saints Row 2 is better on the PS3. Yes, they have better hardware but the games really aren’t that good. Halo: Reach is the last game isn’t it? Either, from what I’ve heard, it’s a damn great game! So is Gears of War! It’s amazing! And Xbox 360 fans suck? I’ve had my Xbox for around 6 months I think and not once has it over-heated or even begun to feel hot. Although my brother has a PS3, he didn’t even put a game in and it was already the room’s radiator, just after 10 minutes! But at the end of the day, is it really about the capabilities of both consoles running at the same speed (although Xbox has the Kinect, you are the controller, you’re not holding anything) who have the same games, one maybe having better graphics than the other, or is it about having the console for gameplay and online play? I love Left 4 Dead and Gears of War (Halo isn’t as good as I wanted it to be but whatever) and Xbox has so many more amazing exclusives but all I really want from the PS3 is GT5. Everything else bores the crap out of me. Microsoft pisses me off sooo much sometimes but Sony is just paying for the name company now and that’s seriously all they care about, their name!

Who ever says Xbox 360 is better is pretty much retarded. All their games are on PC, and PC is a much better machine than Xbox. On top of that, PS3 processor is even more superior than a PC. If you go through school and learn some computer fucking architecture in engineering school you would have figured it out. It’s just all the big hungry company wants to make $$$ and pump out games as fast as they can without optimizing using crap technology that Intel+MS feeds them. Seriously, go learn computer architecture and learn why cell CISC power processor is much better if you learn to code with it. And to be honest, Halo and Gears of War and similar types of FPS is more like a 12-year-old game even with blood and gore. Seriously? IT’S THE SAME SHIT FPS. I find Little Big Planet more mature. I think PS3 has more variety of taste in games also. Xbox is more like Xcox. Sorry man!
Yes I agree. This will be understood in a better way provided if you belong to the category of some tech geek or belong to the computing field. Higher resolution PS3 processor is quite fast and I have experienced this.

I love how people fight about how they supported playstation from the start, when final fantasy begun on nintendo systems. I have every console bar the PS3 and the PSP because the PS3 has barely changed from the PS2 (which was and still is an amazing console), so I’m happy playing FFXII on my Xbox 360 because the graphics are only a few pixels different and PS3 as a console is a complete rip-off and letdown.

Oh and by the way if you read the article PROPERLY it states that the images shown in the ad were NOT from gameplay. All that this highlights is the fact that they played pre-rendered video from the ps3 version to advertise an xbox360 game which is misleading only due to the fact that 360 discs do not have the capacity to contain large amounts of pre-rendered video whereas blu ray does. This does NOT mean the ps3 is capable of displaying and running a game at a better quality and speed, just shitty video sequences that no one can be bothered to watch anyway
