Xbox 360 and PS3 Slim Price Cuts Boost Sales
Xbox sales jump 43 per cent after console price drop.
The console wars continued this week as Microsoft and Sony both slashed prices in order to stimulate sales growth.
Microsoft announced it was cutting £30 off the top price for its Xbox 360 Elite bringing the console under £200, whilst Sony’s new and improved PlayStation 3 Slim went on sale yesterday carrying a price tag of £250.
It came as no surprise to learn that UK sales of the Xbox rocketed by 43 per cent over the bank holiday in view of the price cut as customers flocked to buy the Microsoft console in time for the latest Grand Theft Auto IV addon pack, scheduled for release next month. PS3 sales dropped in the same week by 20 per cent in anticipation of the new slim line version which was made available yesterday.
The new PS3 Slim has had quite a radical upgrade to bring it in line with its Xbox nemesis. The hard drive has been tripled from 40Gb to match the Xbox 360′s 120Gb hard drive, whilst aesthetically the Slim looks sleeker and sexier, being 36 per cent lighter and only two thirds the size of the original PS3.
Fuel efficiency isn’t usually a priority for dedicated gamers, but Sony have gone the extra mile to make the PS3 Slim not only technically more proficient, but also 34 per cent more fuel efficient, as part of its “green” drive. As the International Business Times commented, the specs sound more like a finely tuned Mercedes than a gaming console.
For all the PS3 Slim’s improvements however, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 still seems to be in the driving seat. In these hard times, Xbox’s cheaper console could be the added incentive to tip the balance in the pre-Christmas lead up sales.
Microsoft Europe’s vice president of Interactive Entertainment Business, Chris Lewis told MCV: “We know that price is a critical influencing factor in consumer choice, but we also know that consumers across Europe are looking for value, benefit and entertainment experiences, so we need to address all these points to continue to grow and be successful in Europe.”

I purchased a Xbox 360 two years ago and it is a pile of s***. I have spent more time sending it back to McAllen Texas for repair then I have spent playing it. I was always loyal to Microsoft and the Xbox but now I have come to realize that Sony has come out with a console that is not only reliable but just as good as the S***box 360. And I won’t have to worry about it breaking down every time I turn it on.
It sucks monkey balls.
I’ve just bought one and it’s much lighter and much slimmer it doesn’t make hardly any noise and it’s 120GB which is huge. I recommend everyone to get one because it’s much better!!!!!!
Everyone, 360 is still the best, and the price drop is just confirming it!!
Come on dude. Why do you think the PS3 costs more?
A Blu-ray player, a Wi-Fi controller built in, rechargable controllers, and free online gaming makes PS3 a no-brainer at this price. The PS3 is a much better deal.
I have owned my Xbox 360 for a year and it quite frequently does not read discs (original games). My mates have the PS3 and say it is much more reliable.
This is why the Xbox 360 is much cheaper. You get what you pay for.
Purchased an Xbox 360 elite last year hoping this would be more reliable than the launch models. How wrong was I? It failed at 13 months old. I have had my PS3 since may 2007 and this has had no problems.
The Xbox 360 used to keep breaking down but is now reliable and is wiping the floor with Sony’s PlayStation 3 because the social network isn’t as good as Xbox Live and Xbox 360 games are way better than PlayStation 3 games. Some games like Gears you can only get on Xbox 360 not PlayStation 3. PlayStation used to be top dog but now Microsoft are leading the way and Sony are trailing behind in the dust.
Way to name one Xbox game… MGS4. Heavy rain. God of War 1, 2 and 3. Infamous. Resistance 1 and 2, Killzone 2, Uncharted 1 and 2, Little Big Planet… just a few off the top of my head. The games are far worse.

I hope you realize that 95% percent of all Xbox exclusive games are also on PC. And that the Live community is a pile of steaming turd. So basically you’re better off with a gaming PC and a PS3, because the few PS3 exclusives that are coming out or already out are great (see: Uncharted 1 and 2, Heavy Rain, MGS4, Killzone 2 – although personally I didn’t like it, littlebigplanet, etc.).
You all are a bunch of dorks. Why don’t you try going outside and doing something in the real world?
Something in the real world? Like going outside and posting on news forums from my computer? Yeah I’ll try that…
You are a total loser, what are you even doing here posting stuff like that anyway? Obviously you’re going on a stereotype of gamers that is mostly created by movies and TV. I bet you’re some loser virgin trying to make yourself feel a little better about your small penis and lack of real friends. And by that I mean ones who actually care about you.
It’s better on a console.
My son swapped his 360 for a PS3 last weekend & I was very impressed. I have been a proud owner of a 360 from launch, now I have been turned.
What shall I choose? Xbox Elite or PS3 Slim?
I have had a 360 twice and both had the red ring of death, so I went to PS3 and had no probs except scratching disks. That’s why I am going to see if I can get a Slim.
My son has owned both and I do not see that either is much better than the other. If you enjoy watching your CDs scratch while playing PS3 Slim, then go with that. Now if you enjoy hearing your child complain about the freezing up of the Xbox 360 during their favorite game, then go with it. For my money, I would have a system which can be counted on whenever you want good gaming. I believe if the companies who make these systems would go back to the cartridges, they would have more enjoyment, and less complaining. The DSi still has them and they seem to have given us the least trouble, and less loss of time and money.
