YouTube turning into Mutetube
Fans angry that YouTube has started muting music videos without copyright authorisation.
Google-owned YouTube has begun muting user uploaded content that features music that could be protected under copyright law.
The move has sparked anger with many users of the free online movie sharing site.
The company’s decision to mute videos is an attempt to fight the illegal use of copyright protected music. Finding a happy medium for all users and the owners of the music, seems to be a task that keeps them busy full-time.
According to YouTube, the company work with the music community on a daily basis to licence music for use on the YouTube site.
They claim, however, that music licencing is a complicated issue, and that the rights to a single song could require permission from more than one source. This is especially true with fan-made videos incorporating commercial music.
One of the measures YouTube has put in place is to implement a system called AudioSwap. AudioSwap allows users to add pre-cleared music from a library that is constantly updated by the Youtube team.
YouTube has warned uploaders that one company they have failed to come to an agreement with is Warner Music Group. This means that if a user were to post a video with a song that belongs to this company, it is bound to be muted.
Whilst fans may be angry that their content has been muted in the past, YouTube has done everything it can to give them a secure a legal option going forward. If you want you videos to have sound, stick with AudioSwap.
