Excitement for developer Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 has racked up a couple of notches with the recent announcements of a slated Spring release for the beta combined with the prospect of unlockable bonuses based on Epic’s previous hit titles.

Epic Games Design director Cliff Bleszinski posted on Twitter yesterday that fans of the developers other efforts were in for a treat with the next incarnation of Gears of War:

Look for special unlocks in Gears 3 for those of you who have played other Epic games such as Shadow Complex, UT3, Gears, and Bulletstorm.

“Special unlocks” is quite an open-ended declaration, so for now the nature of those unlocks is up for excited speculation. However, since Epic Games isn’t afraid to display a sense of humor in its games, ideas from the weird and wacky department may have as much merit as more sensible suggestions like various vehicles, weapons or player avatars from Epic’s non-Gears of War games.

Sure, seeing Locust aggressors sawed in half by a Lancer might not be everyone’s idea of high comedy, but watching this clip of Marcus Fenix’s inspired performance should make it clear that Epic Games doesn’t always take itself too seriously.

What references to previous Epic Games titles do you want to see in Gears of War 3? An option for Unreal Tournament style announcements of impressive kills would get my vote.

An overblown and gravelly voice booming out “Headshot!” and “Multi-kill!” wouldn’t be too much of a stretch and it would fit very nicely with the impressive adrenaline surges that Gears of War inspires.
