5 Of The Most Underrated Xbox Games

0

I thought it’d make for an interesting blog to look at some of the most underrated titles on the Xbox. A few of the titles listed below I didn’t think would be so overlooked. But to my surprise some are underrated and others are really really hated to a point of having entire communities online discussing how bad they are.

So let’s take a look at 5 of the most underrated Xbox games in recent times. These are purely just my opinions, so if you think I’ve got some of these wrong, let me know in the comment section.

Quantum Break

Released all the way back in April 2016, Quantum Break is a science slash action adventure game. You play as Jack, who is able to manipulate time and based on certain decision points in the game it’s up to you how it plays out. What makes this game great is that it intertwines cutscenes of a live action TV show. The actors in these cutscenes are the same voice actors in the game. I wouldn’t say the game is difficult but the plot, voice actors, and graphics are fantastic. As a single player only game, it’s definitely up there for me but not for others it seems, which is why I’ve included it on this list.

Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 is the sequel to Titanfall, a first person shooter. Now to be honest I was unsure whether or not to include Titanfall 2 on this list. The reason being, all over the internet there are gaming forums and discussion boards where a hell of a lot of people cite Titanfall 2 as being one of the most underrated xbox games. If so many people are saying it’s underrated, surely it can’t be underrated! I’ve included it anyway and the reason why is simple. Whilst doing my research for this blog I myself thought it was often overlooked! I had to dig deep to find people that thought it wasn’t.

Give Titanfall 2 a shot, you may just love it!

Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare

Another game released back in 2016, the game wasn’t just overrated but it was pretty heavily scrutinised and hated when it was launched! I know the futuristic game mechanics aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but it doesn’t deserve the hate thrown at it.

It isn’t the greatest game in the COD franchise but it’s not terrible. It’s a lot better than black ops three that’s for sure. I feel the hate stemmed from gamers getting a bit tired of the genre and suffered from a bit of burnout, the market felt saturated with futuristic titles at the time. The game has some awesome unique weapons and game mechanics. The only thing I really thought let this game down a bit was the map level design.

Give Infinite Warfare another go and it may just surprise you, I feel opinions will change in a few years and this game will be considered one of the better titles in the franchise.

Stardew Valley

Developed by indie developer Eric Barone over a period of 4 years, this simple simulation RPG won’t exactly set the world ablaze with awesome graphics or intense voice acting and cut scenes. It is after all a pixel based farming simulator. It’s got an awesome following on most platforms but the Xbox scene seems to underrate the game somewhat. You start the game receiving a small plot of land in Pelican Town. Your job is to clear the land of boulders, trees, stumps, and weeds so that you can restore the land to a fully functioning farm. The task you face is to generate revenue as you work on expanding your land and buildings.

Prey

Probably the most underrated game on this list. Prey is an awesome shooter that somewhat reminds me of Bioshock, Half-Life or something of that nature. The game is set on board the Talos-I space station, the tasks you with navigating an alien infestation of gargantuan proportions. According to online commentators a lack of marketing and lots of bugs at release brought it down the pecking order a bit.

Summary

So there you have it, my list of 5 underrated Xbox games. Have we got it right? Or can you think of another game that’s more underrated than the ones we have on our list? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

5 Best Ever Playstation Games

The Playstation 2 is now 20 years old. To this day it remains the best selling console of all time with a staggering 159 million units sold. With that many sold it’s easy to see why there are so many great games for the platform. Game developers had a blast creating some epic titles.

Today, we’re taking a look at 5 of the best Playstation 2 games ever released.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

So I went all in on the first entry on this list. GTA: SA is by far the best GTA ever released for the PS2. GTA III and GTA: VICE CITY are great but San Andreas is in a different league all together. If I could have one wish, it’d be for Rockstar to release a re-mastered San Andreas on a modern Playstation.

Initially released in 2004 it went on to sell 27.5 million copies up until 2011. I was unable to find any figures after this date. Even today it’s often considered by most gamers to be one of the greatest games ever made.

I even have a copy of it today on my PC. I play it sometimes for a bit of nostalgia. It’s such a good game and it has stood the test of time. The soundtrack is fantastic and the gameplay is impeccable.

It’s available still from Amazon for around £20.00

Kingdom Hearts 2 is another awesome game for the PS2. It was developed by Square-Enix. It’s well worth picking up and playing, the latest one is available for PS4 now.

Manhunt

Probably one of the most controversial games released on the PS2. Partly due to the nature of the game and partly due to a murder that took place when a gamer allegedly became obssesed with the game and killed his friend.

Now we have the morbid stuff out of the way. If we take the game for what it is, a game, then it can only really be described as fantastically gruesome. The actual game-play is really good and even though the plot is quite simple the game developers have managed to tell a fantastic story throughout the missions.

The ways in which you execute members of  “The Hoods” get more and more gruesome as the game goes on.

It was released in 2003 for the Playstation 2 and went platinum in less than a year.

The game is available from CEX for around £3.

Metal Gear Solid 2

To give it it’s full title Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty (MGS2)  is one hell of a game. The action stealth game was made by Konami. The legendary entertainment business are a powerhouse when it comes to games development.

MGS2 used to frustrate the hell out of me because I wasn’t used to using stealth to complete a mission. This was because I hadn’t played the original MGS games. The switch to stealth was slow but once I got the hang of it I really started to enjoy the game and as did millions of other gamers that hadn’t used stealth before.

It’s a direct sequel to the first game. This time around you play as Raiden, a rookie agent who is tasked with bringing down a terrorist organisation who have taken over a government facility.

The game was originally released for the PS2 in November 2001 but even before it’s release it had acquired 1.57 million pre orders! That’s crazy but totally expected due to the success of the first game.

You can pick up a copy of the game for as little as £1 from CEX.

Pro Evo Soccer 2006

Whilst doing some research for this blog article, I knew I had to include a football game. I asked my brother this simple question ‘What is the best football game ever made for the PS2?’ He replied, ‘Without doubt Pro Evo 6, probably my favourite football game ever.’

Pro Evo 6 was released in 2006 for the Playstation 2. This was the first Pro Evo game that featured a fully licensed Ligue 1. It also features John Terry on the front of the game. A lot of football game fans always missed the fully licensed kits and teams that you get with the likes of FIFA but Pro Evo always had the better game play and for that reason was adored by it’s fans.

Pro Evo 2006 is on this list for good reason. It’s an amazing football game. The PS2 version of the game was awarded “Double Platinum” status from the ELSPA. This meant that it had surpassed 600,000 copies sold in the United Kingdom. I’ve had a look online at some prominent Playstation 2 magazines, the official Playstation 2 magazine gave it a full 10/10.

The game is available to buy for 50p! Again, from CEX.

Timesplitters

This was probably one of the earlier first person shooters I played on the PS2. It was brought to the platform by the same people who were responsible for bringing Tomb Raider, Eidos Interactive.

Timesplitters was released during the year of the millenium bug, the year 2000. The game is basically a time travel first person shooter. The graphics are great and the soundtrack is diverse. The best part about the game is that you can put it down for long periods of time and pick it back up again, the plot is light so it’s not really that important you keep aware of the back story.

I remember me and my friends would spend hours and hours on the multiplayer and co-op modes. For that nostalgic reason alone, it deserves to be on the best ps2 games of all time list.

It went onto sell more than one million copies at the launch. This didn’t satisfy Free Radical as they wanted to create a legendary game. I don’t think millions of copies make a game legendary, it’s how it makes the players feel that allows a game to get a cult following.

The original development team Free Radical unfortunately went into administration but nobody can ever take away the Timesplitters legacy from them.

How to Win at Words with Friends 2 – Lightning Round

The Lightning round is a new addition bought in with Words with Friends 2, and it brings a massive change in gameplay. Seasoned players have to adjust to team tactics and for some this has been tricky (at least, judging by my teammates every time I’ve played!)

In the Lightning round, you work with a team of five others to reach 750 points before the opposing team. Importantly, you play completely independently of the other team, meaning every word you play needs to help out your teammates – no defensive plays here!

1.     Set up plays for your teammates

This is probably the most useful tactic if you have teammates who are vaguely competent players. However, you really don’t know whether they are any good or not until you are playing – so you may as well assume they are Words with Friends pros ready to capitalise on the amazing opportunities you are about to open up for them.

Essentially, you want to create chance for your teammates to:

  • Extend off your words, especially when they can extend onto a bonus tile;
  • Hit bonus tiles, especially if they can hit multiple tiles in one go;
  • Play all their tiles

This means that sometimes you’re going to have to deliberately sacrifice you personal score.

Take the below example. The current player has played ‘CANE’ (8 POINTS). They could have played ‘CANED’ (20 POINTS). However, by leaving the ‘D’ for the next player they have set up a high scoring opportunity. Now, the next player can play ‘CANED’ (10 POINTS) + a word containing ‘D’. In fact, if the next player plays a 5-letter word beginning or ending in ‘D’, they will hit TWO double word score bonus tiles! Let’s add these up in practice:

Player One plays ‘CANED’

P1: CANED = 20

P2: DENSE = 14

Total = 34 points

Player One plays ‘CANE’

P1: CANE = 8

P2: CANED = 20

DENSE =28

Total = 56 points

2.     Use ‘S’, ‘D’, and ‘R’ wisely

Just as in normal gameplay for Words with Friends, the S, D and R are some of the most powerful tiles on your rack – this is because they can be used to extend off of your teammates words and pick up lots of more points for your team – just like in the first example.

3.     Play fast!

The reason the Lightning round is so named is because you need to play with lightning speed. There’s no point spending ages to try every combination or to try and find that 7-letter word, because the whole time the opposing team are playing words and beating you to it. An 100-pointer is only worth it if the other team haven’t managed to score at least that much in the time you spent coming up with it.

To help you play quickly and still score high, keep an eye out for opportunities your teammates have set up for you, bonus tiles that you can play to and high scoring tiles on your rack – more often than not, there will be an obvious play and if not – swap your tiles or pass and get on with the game.

4.     Open up the board – don’t play defensively!

Playing defensively can be a tricky habit to get out of – after all, in normal gameplay, it’s an essential tactic to prevent your opponent hitting bonus tiles.

However, in Lightning round, you have to take a completely opposite approach and actively work to open up the board for your teammates.

Critically you need to reach those all important bonus tiles out at the edges – and luckily, that can be easily done with just two words, because the board is in Lightning round is smaller.

5.     Hit the bonus tile combos

As with normal gameplay, hitting the bonus tile combos is a quick way to an easy win. In Lightning round, the board layout is slightly smaller and that means lots of opportunities for bonus combos!

Head straight to the outside edges to pick up triple letter/triple word bonus combos.

How to Win at Words with Friends 2 Without Paying Any Money

Ever been confronted with a seemingly unbeatable opponent in Words with Friends 2? Someone who always seems to place exactly the right tiles in exactly the right place on every single move…

You might assume that the best way to win a game of Words with Friends 2 is to create the longest words – but this is far from true. As you’ve seen in tactics one and two, the trick to winning is to maximise your score and minimise your opponents, and it has as much to do with mathematics and strategy as it does with words.

The truth is there are two key reasons that some players excel in Words with Friends 2:

  1. They know the tactics we’re about to explain in this post
  2. They are cheating!

So, without further ado – here is how to win at Words with Friends 2!

Tactic 1

Play to the triple letter and triple word scores

The key to winning Words with Friends is to maximise the words you play on triple letter and triple word scores. These tiles have the power to boost your score massively, and when played together, can unlock huge scores, even with relatively mundane words.

Powerful Words with Friends players consistently create, or trick their opponents into creating, opportunities to play the triple letter and triple word scores in one go.

A perfect opportunity to play the triple letter and triple word combo AND a two letter word across the ‘E’ in ‘MAGE’
  • Prevent opponents from playing triple letter and triple words scores – take defensive action when making your play
  • Trick your opponent into opening up a triple letter and triple word combo opportunity

Tactic 2

Extend your opponent’s words

The most valuable tiles in the game are the letter which let you extend your opponent’s words – ‘S’, ‘R’, ‘D’ and the blank tiles.

When extending their words you essentially get the scores for two words – the word you have extended and the word you play off of it – maximising your score for the turn and often opening up the board.

Remember, Word with Friends 2 allows plurals and different tense of the verb. You can also use rarer letters to extend words – for example by adding a ‘F’ to ‘END’ to create ‘FEND’

This tactic is even more effective when you can extend their word onto a scoring tile, which you’ll receive the benefit of twice!

This straightforward word extension both boosts the player’s score – with another ‘S’ they could have created ‘SHES’ and ‘TIES’ as well!
  • Save ‘S’ tiles for opportunities to extend your opponent’s words
  • Prevent opponents from extending your words by choosing words that are difficult or impossible to extend
  • Maximise scores by extending onto a scoring tile

Tactic 3

Use two letter words wisely

Think of the humble two letter word as your best friend in Words with Friends 2. Two letter words are essential to open up gaps on the board, thwart your opponents attempts to stop you hitting certain tiles and maximise your score.

The range of two letter words you can play go beyond ‘it’, ‘to’ and ‘so’ – there are loads of combinations, and the best players use the full range to their advantage.

Two letter words are commonly used to play a side-by-side word – and there’s no limit on how many tiles you end up playing side-by-side. And don’t forget, you get scores for both your word, and the two letter words you have played.

There are some powerful two letter word combinations which can score up to 11 points by themselves: ja, jo, qi, za, xu – all are accepted by Words with Friends and can boost your score!

Words with Friends Two Letter Words
This early two-letter word combo means the players ends up scoring for three words – they could have boosted this further by continuing the play across the ‘TEM’ of ‘TOTEM’ with the right letters.
  • Play words side-by-side using two letter words
  • Test different two letter word combinations, even if you don’t think they are a real word
  • Remember the high scoring two letter words, especially when getting rid of your last few tiles towards the end of the game.

Tactic 4

Bigger isn’t always better

It’s tempting to play to longest word you can in order to maximise you points – especially if you’ve only got low scoring tiles on your rack. But unless you’re playing all 7 tiles (which gets you a decent 35 point bonus) it can often cause more harm than good.

You see, your score is only as good as your opponent’s next score, and long words can create opportunities for your opponent to hit scoring tiles to boost their own score.

Instead, it can be better to play defensively and block your opponent from reaching bonus tiles or otherwise creating a higher scoring word (such as by extending your word)

The long word here ‘DODGEMS’ is well played, as it extends ‘FLEW’ and gets the 35 point bonus for using all 7 tiles on their rack! However, it does open up opportunities for their opponent to play onto the high scoring tiles – but this is risk measured against the 87 points they have managed to score with this word.
  • Play defensively – the longest word isn’t always best.
  • Your score is only as good as your opponent’s next score – close opportunities for them to hit bonus tiles.
